ROUTINE INSPECTION

60th Oberhausen Short Film Festival

3 May 2014

Performance, Film Without Film section, curated by Mika Taanila.

Zollamt, Bad Radkersburg – Steirischer Herbst Festival

18 September – 23 November 2014

Curated by Luigi Fassi

Routine Inspection is a filmic inspection of a prehistoric cave on the mountainous border between Slovenia and Austria.  A single 16mm roll was used in the cave of Potočka Zijalka – the film tape went from maximal exposure, filming white snow in front of the cave, to minimal exposure and finally absolute darkness of the cave. Instead of a film projection, the 130m long negatives tape was offered to the audience to touch and inspect as evidence. This 10-minute participatory performance was filmed, then the damaged film tape was digitally scanned and both were edited into a 6-minute film. The film will be screened in Potočka Zijalka cave in the summer 2017.

We develop materially ephemeral settings and objects designed to engage utopian ideas in art, architecture and design by incorporating everyday materials and forms of play and participation. From make-shift architectural modifications of public and semi-public spaces—cinemas, a library, galleries—to constructing temporary environments and objects, our works are products of precisely specified processes while also responding to their sites. Many of our spaces and objects are activated—meant to be moved and inhabited, privileging play and bodily engagement over vision. Artworks become proposals, maquettes, or models—exploratory assertions of radical possibilities.
